PROJECT. Commercial

KFC South Penrith

KFC South Penrith – Store of the Future. Our brief was to refurbish the existing facility to improve upon the customer experience and to meet KFC’s latest brand standards. Originally built in 1978, the last upgrade was 2018.

  • Traditional Custodians of the land: Darug
  • Client: KFC Australia
  • Project: Extension and renovation of existing KFC site.
  • Location: South Penrith
  • Project Duration: 2021 – 2022
  • Floor Levels: 1
  • Capacity: 58 Seats, 28 car spaces, 14 car stack drive thru
  • Footprint: 3,100sqm
  • Team: Matthew Hornby, Gaby Mueller

Points of difference: To develop several additions to the existing store to address the current need for a covid friendly environment to reduce the physical contact between staff and customers. The interior also required to be upgraded to a new modern design.

The research for this project required the review of what processes others globally have introduced to reduce the risk of covid transition between customers and staff.

Sustainability: An environmental initiative was to replace the standard laminate internal wall lining with a new sustainable product called saveBOARD. This wall lining is made from recycled compressed cardboard and other materials.

Innovation: Our solution for delivering a covid safe food service was a technical outcome where food was distributed to customers by using a selection of conveyors. This contactless drive thru delivery service was a modernisation from a traditional staffed drive thru for KFC and has captured the attention of KFC USA who have taken interest in our designs.

There was a particular focus on illumination and lighting in our designs to give the store an attractive and competitive edge during evening trading hours.

Outcome: The design work on this site introduced KFC South Penrith as a landmark site for the brand. Our work is now enjoyed by a plethora of customers who visit the store, and by community members who pass by, as it lights up the night and offers eye-catching features by day. KFC was delighted with the final product.
